RESEARCH
PROCRASTINATION?
Everyone has been there.
Perhaps
the dissertation/thesis project seems overwhelming.
Perhaps you are concerned it’s not going
to be as “good” as you expect of yourself.
You could feel that you have not acquired enough
practical skills yet. These reasons and many others
can become barriers to getting started or getting
any momentum going. A consultant can be of assistance
in helping you replace an ABD (all-but-dissertation)
with your PhD.
One advantage to hiring an outside research consultant
is that such a person is not mired in the “politics”
of your program, has no real power or authority
over you and might be able to help you take a
fresh look at your situation from an outsider’s
perspective and from the perspective of having
helped others with similar concerns many times
before.
I always encourage a student to speak with his
or her advisor regarding hiring a consultant.
I believe that the consultant is not in the role
of judge but in a position of helping build skills,
of improving your dissertation/thesis project
and of support.
